60 Year old improves handwriting

60 year old improves handwriting

It was about 9.30 pm on a cold November night in 2009 when the phone rang. I was used up after a tiring day and let the phone ring die down. A few minutes later the phone sprang into life again and pulled my heavy eyelids open wide to the thought that someone is calling to convey something urgent and picked the call.

A matured, hoarse voice spoke, “Sorry to call late. I need your help though. I am currently 61 years old. Can you help me”?

I answered, “Sir, it looks like you dialled the wrong number. Could you please check again? Good night” and hung up.

Within a few minutes, the phone went live again with the ringtone. Annoyed I answered call controlling the anger, “Yes! Can I help you!”. The matured voice answered, “I beg your forgiveness for the late call. This isn’t a wrong call. I am fully aware, I am calling Writewiz. I need your help.”
The sincerity in the voice and trembling in the modulation sent a chill down my spine. The instant thought was that he must be bedridden and maybe he is gonna ask for financial help. I said, “Please tell me how I can assist you”.
The aged voice continued, “My name is Gurumoorthy, I am 61 years old. I am working in a private company. But I have a problem. I unable to write and I have depended on others even to write a cheque.”

Hearing this shook my judgmental thoughts. How humans think without knowing the facts. I felt deeply ashamed. The guilt feel urged me to help him. I stated, ” Please come and meet us tomorrow.”

Guru replied, “But it is not that easy”. I was puzzled and asked him why? He went forward, “My hands are trembling constantly.”

My intuition said that we can do it. I replied, “We will our best, please visit us”.

The following evening, a senior citizen walked into our office who was mistaken for the grandfather of one of our students. He asked the receptionist for me and said he has come to join our handwriting program. The receptionist got up from her chair awe stuck and walked him into my room and introduced him.

He occupied his seat with his eyes wet revealing how his inability to write has affected him. I gave him confidence and engaged him for our series of assessments to ascertain his current writing difficulties. We discovered that his hands shook in the longitudinal direction to his palm. There were numerous paused in writing spells. Sometimes he had to use the other hand to provide more stability to the shaking hand.

After the assessment, he asked us, “When can I join? How many adults will be there in my batch?”.

What I told him would have shattered if it were other men of his years. I said, “All our batches have a mixture of students from KG to 12”. He set up his eyebrows and frowned for a second. But the troubles he faced because of his inability to write pushed him to say, “Can I start today?”

That gave me enormous confidence that is this gonna be a success story. I stated that his condition needed preparation of some special worksheets specific to his tremors and hence he can join the following Monday for a 60-hour course.

This made me a lead time to create all necessary worksheets to start off for the first week.

We were ready on Monday and he came in at 3.30 for his first class. He worked for one hour and at the end, he said he wished his hand and fingers were removable so that he can escape the pain.

“Guru, it is like a hand gym. No pain no gain”. He just smiled. That gave me a lot more confidence.

After every class he attended we analysed his work and created new worksheets to offset his difficulties. This continued for 60 sessions and at the end, he said, ” Today is a day I regained my self-respect. I need not depend on anyone to write a cheque or a form. I thank you from bottom of my heart. My hand trembling stopped. My motor skills are restored. I am proud that I made the right decision to connect here. God bless you all!”, he wept in happiness.

I will never in my life forget that moment.
